Pengzu Facial Massage: A Popular TCM Dry-Guided Facial Rejuvenation Technique

Pengzu is universally recognized as the founding ancestor of health preservation in ancient China and revered by later generations as a sage of longevity. Legend records he lived for 800 years. Mastering daoyin and qi circulation exercises and adhering to regular physical conditioning, he maintained strong bones and tendons, a glowing complexion, and youthful vitality even in old age.

1. Origin of the Technique: Named After a Sage, Documented in Ancient Texts

Many traditional health preservation techniques have been passed down under the names of ancient virtuous figures. Though this facial massage bears Pengzu’s name as a later attribution, it is not an unsubstantiated folk remedy. Recorded explicitly in multiple classical TCM health monographs, it is an authentic external conditioning therapy with a thousand-year inheritance history.

·                Records on Cultivating Nature and Prolonging Life states: "Rub your palms together until hot, then massage your face upward from the chin to dispel pathogenic qi and endow the complexion with radiance."

·                Supplement to the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces notes: "Early in the morning, rub your ears alternately with left and right hands… Next, heat your palms and massage your face… This eliminates dull complexion qi and brightens the facial skin."

·                Collected Essays on External Therapy writes: "Wiping the face upon waking does not merely render the skin lustrous; it harmonizes qi and blood, lifts yang qi and tonifies the stomach. Rub both palms to generate heat, then cover and wipe the face."

The facial rubbing described in these classics refers to the Pengzu Facial Massage, commonly known simply as dry face washing. Ordinary water cleansing only removes surface dust, excess sebum and dead cutin, serving basic cleansing purposes without reaching deeper facial meridians or regulating qi and blood flow. Dry face washing differs fundamentally from conventional washing.

2. Core Mechanism: The Key Lies in Dry Friction to Circulate Qi and Nourish the Face

The entire procedure is performed with dry hands on a dry face with no water added — this is the core essence of the therapy. Direct friction between the palms and facial skin generates warmth that penetrates the subcutaneous fascia, unblocks facial meridians, accelerates qi and blood circulation, and transports essential qi from the internal organs upward to nourish the facial skin. It delivers internal-to-external conditioning, rather than superficial skincare alone.

3. Standard Operating Procedures (Simplified & Complete Versions)

(1) Simplified Daily Version (Time-efficient & Easy to Perform)

Rub your palms vigorously until fully warm. Slide your hands upward evenly from the chin to the nose wings and forehead, then sweep horizontally toward the hairline on both sides. Perform the routine for 2 to 3 minutes. Always lift upward in one direction; do not rub back and forth repeatedly.

(2) Complete Ancient Daoyin Routine

Step 1: Pinch, lift and knead both auricles until the ears feel warm and full.

Step 2: Spread your five fingers wide and comb your hair backward from the frontal hairline to the nape of the neck, repeating 14 times.

Step 3: Rub your palms thoroughly hot, then wipe the entire face in an upward direction.

This practice is not time-restricted, with morning application yielding the best results; it can also be done in spare moments throughout the day. It requires no equipment or expenses, taking just a few minutes daily to complete a traditional Chinese qi-guided facial spa. Long-term practice improves dull complexion, sagging facial soft tissues, nasolabial folds, horizontal forehead lines, outer canthus wrinkles and other signs of facial aging.

4. Multiple Conditioning Benefits

1)      Anti-aging and complexion brightening: Unblocks facial blood circulation, evens skin tone, lifts sagging soft tissues and gradually fades both dynamic and static wrinkles.

2)      Reduces facial edema and defines contours: Morning puffiness is mostly caused by stagnant retained internal water-dampness. Heat generated by friction accelerates local fluid metabolism, drains excess trapped water, tightens facial outlines and delivers a visually slimmer facial appearance.

3)      Internal organ regulation: Beyond facial skincare, it lifts yang qi, tonifies the stomach, harmonizes systemic qi and blood, and nurtures internal organs concurrently.

This ancient health technique has regained popularity in recent years. The renowned artist Cai Guoqing has repeatedly demonstrated and shared the practice during live streams to popularize dry face washing. Netizens have playfully dubbed him the "Chief Ambassador" of this traditional therapy, bringing the age-old technique back into mainstream view.

5. Standard Operation Precautions

1)      Stop the practice if you suffer from acne, eczema, unhealed wounds, allergic dermatitis or other facial skin lesions, as friction irritation may worsen skin damage.

2)      Trim and smooth your fingernails before operation to avoid accidental scratches on the facial epidermis from sharp nail edges.

3)      Apply skincare products after finishing the dry facial massage morning and night, which will drastically boost skin absorption efficiency.
